                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               In1981 there were 2 bald eagles counted here in NH. In 2010, the NH Audubon Society logged 75 !  Lake Winnipesaukee is currently home to 12 of these remarkable birds, 8 adults and 4 immature. The increase, which can be an indicator of the environmental health of the Lakes Region of NH, is amazing ! I live on Cow Island in Tuftonboro NH during the summer, and eagles fish along the Winnipesaukee shore between The Broads and Cow Island (Idelwild). In the winter we are on the mainland on Dismore Point in Gilford…when we hear a racket from smaller birds…its usually followed by an eagle fishing the open water where the ice bubblers are located. The largest increase of Bald Eagles in NH has been at the seacoast where the feeding is easier with no ice…but with more and more open water our lake population grew 30% in the last two years. The Bald Eagle can have a wing span up to 7 feet…weight of  between 9-13 pounds (females are heavier)…they mate for life…with a life of 30 years (50 in captivity)…they are no longer an endangered species, but still threatened, and protected. The nest on this Lake Winnipesaukee Island is enormous, and if all is well, we may add to the count in 2011.
